Have you ever considered what you are using in your toilet to clean it? Is it really safe?
We have been led to believe that we need harsh, often toxic and expensive chemicals to clean properly. But what is the constant use of these products doing to our environment AND our health? Where do those chemicals end up and what effect does it have?
Safe, simple ingredients can be very effective at cleaning around the house, including the toilet. You may be pleasantly surprised at how well DIY recipes work and how much money they save you, along with less toxic chemicals ending up in our environment.
Making your own toilet cleaning pods is simple, quick and easy. Once you have them made you can drop one in the toilet as needed!
What you need:
1 cup baking soda
¼ cup citric acid
1 ½ tbsp unscented Castile soap
15 drops Tea Tree essential oil
Ice Cube tray - a tray with a lid can be helpful!
What you do:
Stir the baking soda and citric acid together until combined. Slowly mix in Castile soap and Tea Tree oil, stirring constantly until the mixture resembles wet sand.
Pack the pod mixture into a mould and let dry for at least 4 hours, I usually leave mine for a day or 2.
If the mixture expands above the mould, firmly press back down.
Once dry, remove the pods from the mould and store in an airtight container.
How to use:
Drop one pod into the toilet bowl, wait until the pod stops bubbling, and scrub. If your pods don't have a big bubble reaction, that's fine. Just leave them for about 10 minutes and come back and scrub the toilet. They will still work!.You can flush or leave until the next person uses the toilet to save water.
TIP - You don't need to make the mixture into pods. If you want to keep as a powder, mix in a bowl and allow it to dry out for 24 hours or so, stiring occasionally. I leave mine on the kitchen bench and stir it everytime I walk past. Once dry you can store in an airtight container and use a scoop in the toilet as needed.
Another simple, low tox cleaning solution!
