If you are considering making your own lip balms or body butters, Candelilla wax is a great plant based option to using beeswax and is suitable for vegans.
Candelilla wax is a plant based wax and a suitable vegan alternative to beeswax. Our candelilla wax pellets are derived from the leaves of the small candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is 100% natural and refined (filtered twice).
Candelilla Wax works as a thickening and hardening agent, a plasticiser, a viscosity modifier, an emollient, and a skin-protective barrier agent that helps prevent the skin from losing moisture. Candelilla Wax is has a reputation to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks as well as the signs of aging, such as wrinkles and age spots. It is said to hydrate parched and scaly skin for enhanced smoothness.
Candelilla wax is a bit denser than beeswax, so you may want to adjust your DIY recipes if you using it as a substitute for beeswax. Use approximately half the amount of candelilla wax as beeswax since it has twice the stiffening powers. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of beeswax, use 1/2 cup of candelilla wax instead.
Note: Candelilla wax has a low flashpoint, so when melting down for your recipes, it is recommended you DO NOT use a microwave as controlling the heat can be difficult. The suggested method would be on the stove top on a low temperature with constant supervision.
